Orthodontics FAQ

Orthodontic treatment can bring up a lot of questions for both children and parents. Whether your child is starting Phase 1 Orthodontics, wearing an expander, using a habit appliance, beginning braces, or adjusting to a retainer, it is normal to wonder what to expect.

At Children’s Dental Center, we want families to feel informed and supported throughout every stage of orthodontic care. Many minor orthodontic concerns can be managed temporarily at home until your child can be seen in our office. However, if your child is in pain, has swelling, has suffered a dental injury, or has an appliance that is broken or loose, please contact our office for guidance.

Children’s Dental Center helps families set the stage for a life-long commitment to oral health in a friendly and approachable manner. Call Children’s Dental Center today to make an appointment. Our office is located at 9885 E. 116th Street, Suite 100, Fishers, IN 46037, and we proudly serve families from Fishers, Indianapolis, Noblesville, Carmel, Westfield, and surrounding Central Indiana communities.

General Orthodontic Questions

When should my child have their first orthodontic evaluation?

Many children benefit from an orthodontic evaluation around age 7. By this age, the first permanent molars and front teeth are often coming in, which allows the dentist to evaluate how the bite is developing. An early evaluation does not always mean your child needs treatment right away. Sometimes, the best approach is simply to monitor growth and development over time.

What is Phase 1 Orthodontics?

Phase 1 Orthodontics is early orthodontic treatment for children who still have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. The goal is to guide growth, create room for permanent teeth, address bite concerns, or help reduce the severity of developing orthodontic problems.

Phase 1 treatment may include expanders, habit appliances, limited braces, or space management. Not every child needs Phase 1 Orthodontics. Our team will only recommend early treatment when it may benefit your child’s growth, bite, or dental development.

Will Phase 1 Orthodontics prevent my child from needing braces later?

Not always. Phase 1 Orthodontics can help guide development and address certain concerns early, but many children still need comprehensive orthodontic treatment later when more permanent teeth have erupted. Early treatment may make future orthodontic care easier or more predictable, but it doesn’t always replace braces or other treatment in the teen years.

What is Comprehensive Orthodontics?

Comprehensive Orthodontics is full orthodontic treatment that focuses on aligning the teeth and correcting the bite. This is often done once most permanent teeth have come in. Comprehensive treatment may include traditional braces, LightForce brackets, retainers, or other orthodontic appliances depending on your child’s needs.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment time depends on your child’s age, growth, orthodontic needs, appliance type, oral hygiene, and how well instructions are followed. Some early treatments may be shorter, while comprehensive orthodontic treatment may take longer. During your child’s consultation, our team will explain the expected timeline based on their specific case.

Do orthodontic appliances hurt?

Orthodontic appliances should not be painful, but your child may feel pressure, soreness, or tenderness after an appliance is placed or adjusted. This is usually temporary. Soft foods, cold drinks, and over-the-counter pain relief (recommended by your child’s healthcare provider) may help during the adjustment period.

If your child has severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or an appliance that is cutting the mouth, please contact our office.

What does an expander do?

An expander is an orthodontic appliance used to gradually widen the upper jaw. It may be recommended if your child has a narrow upper jaw, crowding, or a crossbite. By guiding jaw development while your child is still growing, an expander can help create more room for permanent teeth and improve the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.

What is a habit appliance?

A habit appliance is a custom dental appliance used to help interrupt oral habits such as thumb sucking, finger sucking, prolonged pacifier use, or tongue thrusting. These habits are common in young children, but if they continue for too long, they may affect tooth position, bite development, or jaw growth.

What are LightForce brackets?

LightForce brackets are custom 3D-printed orthodontic brackets designed for the individual patient’s teeth and treatment plan. Unlike standard brackets, LightForce brackets are digitally planned and made to fit your child’s tooth anatomy more precisely.

Why does my child need a retainer?

A retainer helps hold the teeth in their new positions after orthodontic treatment. Teeth can naturally shift over time, especially after braces or other appliances are removed. Wearing the retainer as instructed helps protect your child’s orthodontic results.
