Comprehensive Orthodontics
Comprehensive Orthodontics in Fishers and Indianapolis, IN
A healthy smile is about more than straight teeth. The way your child’s teeth, jaws, and bite fit together can affect chewing, speaking, oral hygiene, comfort, and long-term dental health. Comprehensive Orthodontics focuses on correcting the full smile and bite, helping children and teens achieve better alignment as they grow.
At Children’s Dental Center, we provide Comprehensive Orthodontics for children and teens who are ready for full orthodontic treatment. This may include braces, LightForce brackets, retainers, and other orthodontic appliances depending on your child’s needs. Our goal is to guide your child’s smile in a way that supports both appearance and function.
What Is Comprehensive Orthodontics?
Comprehensive Orthodontics is full orthodontic treatment designed to correct the position of the teeth and the way the bite fits together. While Phase 1 Orthodontics focuses on early guidance while a child still has many baby teeth, comprehensive treatment usually takes place when more permanent teeth have erupted.
This type of treatment may address crowded teeth, spacing, crooked teeth, rotated teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, open bites, and other alignment concerns. It may also help improve how the upper and lower teeth come together when your child bites, chews, or speaks.
Comprehensive Orthodontics is personalized for each child or teen. Some patients may need braces or LightForce brackets. Others may need additional appliances or retainers after treatment. During your child’s consultation, our team will explain what type of treatment is recommended and why.
How Is Comprehensive Orthodontics Different From Phase 1 Orthodontics?
Phase 1 Orthodontics is early treatment that may begin while a child still has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. It is often used to guide jaw growth, create space, correct certain bite concerns, or address habits before they lead to more complicated problems.
Comprehensive Orthodontics is different because it focuses on the full smile once the mouth is more developed. This is often the stage when braces or custom brackets are used to move the teeth into better alignment. Comprehensive treatment may follow Phase 1 Orthodontics, but not every child needs both phases.
Some children only need monitoring early on and then comprehensive treatment later. Others benefit from early appliances first and full braces once more permanent teeth have come in. Our team will help you understand which approach makes the most sense for your child’s smile.
Who Needs Comprehensive Orthodontics?
Your child may benefit from Comprehensive Orthodontics if they have teeth that are crowded, crooked, spaced too far apart, or not coming in properly. Bite problems may also be a reason to consider treatment. These can include overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite, or teeth that do not meet evenly when your child closes their mouth.
Orthodontic concerns are not always cosmetic. Teeth that are crowded or poorly aligned can be harder to clean, which may increase the risk of plaque buildup and cavities. Bite issues can also affect how teeth wear over time and how comfortably your child chews.
Parents may notice that their child’s teeth overlap, twist, stick out, or leave spaces. Some children may complain of difficulty biting into food, chewing comfortably, or keeping certain areas clean. If you have concerns about your child’s smile or bite, an orthodontic evaluation can help determine whether treatment is needed.

When Should Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment Begin?
The right time to begin comprehensive treatment depends on your child’s dental development, bite, growth, and orthodontic needs. Many children and teens begin full orthodontic treatment once most permanent teeth have erupted, but timing can vary from patient to patient.
An early orthodontic evaluation can help us understand what may be needed in the future. Even if your child is not ready for comprehensive treatment right away, regular monitoring allows our team to recommend treatment at the right time.
At Children’s Dental Center, we don’t believe in rushing children into orthodontic treatment before they need it. If your child is not ready, we may recommend observation and follow-up visits. If the timing is right, we’ll explain the treatment plan clearly so you know what to expect.
What Can Comprehensive Orthodontics Correct?
Comprehensive Orthodontics can help correct a wide range of tooth and bite concerns. Treatment may be recommended for crowded teeth, which can happen when there is not enough space for the teeth to line up properly. It may also help close spaces between teeth or guide teeth that have come in at an angle.
Bite correction is another important part of treatment. An overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite can affect the way the teeth meet. When the bite is not properly aligned, certain teeth may experience more pressure than others. Over time, this may contribute to uneven wear or discomfort.
Comprehensive treatment may also help improve overall smile balance. For many children and teens, orthodontic treatment can make them feel more confident about their smile while also supporting better oral health.
What Types of Orthodontic Treatment Are Available?
Comprehensive Orthodontics may include different types of appliances depending on your child’s needs. Braces are one of the most common and effective options for correcting alignment and bite concerns. Braces use brackets and wires to gently move the teeth over time.
Children’s Dental Center may also offer LightForce brackets, which are custom 3D-printed brackets designed around your child’s teeth and treatment plan. This allows for a more personalized approach to braces.
In some cases, additional appliances may be used before or during treatment to help with spacing, bite correction, or jaw guidance. After active treatment is complete, retainers are usually needed to help maintain the results and prevent the teeth from shifting back.
What Should Parents Expect During Treatment?
Comprehensive Orthodontics begins with an evaluation. We will look at your child’s teeth, bite, spacing, jaw development, and overall oral health. Diagnostic information, such as X-rays or digital scans, may be used to help plan treatment.
Once treatment begins, your child will return for regular visits so we can monitor progress and make adjustments. These visits are an important part of keeping treatment on track. The total length of treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case, how the teeth respond, your child’s growth, and how well instructions are followed.
Your child may feel pressure or soreness after braces are placed or adjusted. This is normal and usually improves within a few days. Our team will provide instructions to help your child stay comfortable and care for their teeth during treatment.
