Expanders
Expanders in Fishers and Indianapolis, IN
As children grow, their jaws, teeth, and bite are constantly changing. In some cases, the upper jaw may be too narrow to allow the teeth to come in properly or to fit comfortably with the lower jaw. When this happens, an orthodontic expander may be recommended to gently guide the growth of the upper jaw and create more room for your child’s developing smile.
At Children’s Dental Center, we provide orthodontic expanders for children who may benefit from early jaw guidance as part of Phase 1 Orthodontics. Our team focuses on making care as comfortable, positive, and understandable as possible for both children and parents. We know that orthodontic appliances can feel unfamiliar at first, so we take time to explain the process clearly and help your child feel at ease.
What Is an Orthodontic Expander?
An orthodontic expander is a dental appliance used to gradually widen the upper jaw. It is most often used for children because their jaws are still growing, making it possible to guide development before the bones become more mature.
Expanders are commonly used when a child has a narrow upper arch, crowding, or a bite issue such as a crossbite. A crossbite can happen when the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when the child bites down. If left untreated, this may affect how the teeth meet, how the jaw grows, and how evenly the teeth wear over time.
The goal of an expander isn’t simply to make the smile look wider; it is used to help improve the way the upper and lower teeth fit together, create additional room for permanent teeth, and support healthier dental development as your child grows.
Why Would My Child Need an Expander?
Your child may need an expander if their upper jaw is too narrow for their developing teeth or bite. Some children do not have enough room for permanent teeth to erupt properly. Others may have a crossbite or shifting jaw pattern that becomes more noticeable as they bite, chew, or speak.
An expander may be recommended to help with:
- a narrow upper jaw
- crossbite
- crowded teeth
- permanent teeth that need more room to come in
- bite alignment concerns
- uneven jaw growth or jaw shifting
- early orthodontic development concerns
Not every child with crowding or bite issues needs an expander. Some children may simply need to be monitored as they grow. During your child’s visit, our team will evaluate their teeth, bite, spacing, and jaw development to determine whether an expander is the right option to meet your child’s needs.
How Do Expanders Work?
Expanders apply gentle pressure to the upper jaw over time. Depending on the type of appliance used, the expander may be adjusted gradually to encourage the upper arch to widen. This process creates additional space and helps improve the relationship between the upper and lower teeth.
Because children are still growing, the upper jaw can often respond well to early orthodontic guidance. This is one reason expanders are commonly used during Phase 1 Orthodontics. Early treatment may help address certain problems before they become more complicated later.
Parents are sometimes surprised to see a small space open between the front teeth during expansion. This can be a normal part of the process and often means the appliance is creating room as intended. Our team will explain what to expect so there are no surprises during treatment.

What Should Parents Expect During Expander Treatment?
Before treatment begins, we will examine your child’s teeth and bite and review any needed diagnostic information. If an expander is recommended, we will explain how the appliance works, how long it may be worn, and how parents can help at home.
Some children need a short adjustment period when the expander is first placed. They may notice pressure, extra saliva, mild changes in speech, or a different feeling when eating. These changes are usually temporary as your child gets used to the appliance.
Our team will provide clear instructions for caring for the expander. Depending on the appliance, parents may be shown how to make small adjustments at home. If adjustments are needed, we’ll walk you through the process carefully, so you feel comfortable and confident.
Does an Expander Hurt?
An expander should not be painful, but your child may feel pressure or tightness after the appliance is placed or adjusted. This feeling is usually mild and temporary. Some children describe it as pressure around the teeth, nose, or upper jaw.
It is also common for children to need a little time to adjust to speaking and eating with the appliance. Softer foods may be helpful during the first few days. Our team will let you know which foods to avoid, especially sticky, chewy, or hard foods that could damage the appliance.
We work hard to make the process as easy as possible. If your child is nervous, we will explain each step in a calm, child-friendly way and make sure they feel supported throughout treatment.
Will My Child Still Need Braces Later?
An expander can help improve jaw development and create more space, but it doesn’t always eliminate the need for braces or aligners later. Some children still need Phase 2 Orthodontics once more permanent teeth have erupted.
However, using an expander at the right time may make future orthodontic treatment easier or more predictable. By improving the shape of the upper arch and creating room early, we may be able to reduce the severity of certain bite or crowding problems.
Our team will always explain what the expander is expected to accomplish and what future treatment may still be needed. We want parents to have realistic expectations and feel fully informed before moving forward.
