Phase 1 Orthodontics
Phase 1 Orthodontics in Fishers and Indianapolis, IN
Early orthodontic care can play an important role in helping your child’s smile develop properly. At Children’s Dental Center, we provide Phase 1 Orthodontics for children who may benefit from early guidance while their teeth, jaws, and bite are still growing. This type of treatment is not about rushing children into braces before they are ready. Instead, it allows our team to identify developing concerns early and recommend the right timing for care.
Children’s Dental Center helps families set the stage for a life-long commitment to oral health in a friendly and approachable manner. Our goal is to make each visit pleasant, positive, and reassuring for both children and parents. If your child has crowded teeth, bite concerns, early tooth loss, or jaw development issues, Phase 1 Orthodontics may help create a healthier foundation for future growth.
What Is Phase 1 Orthodontics?
Phase 1 Orthodontics (also known as early interceptive orthodontic treatment) is orthodontic care provided while a child still has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This stage usually takes place before the teenage years, when the mouth and jaw are still actively developing.
The purpose of Phase 1 treatment is to guide growth, improve spacing, and address certain bite problems before they become more complicated. In some cases, early orthodontic care can make future treatment easier, shorter, or more predictable. In other cases, your child may not need treatment right away, but regular monitoring can help us know when the timing is right.
Phase 1 Orthodontics may involve appliances, expanders, limited braces, space management, or habit appliances depending on your child’s needs. Every child’s mouth develops differently, so our recommendations are based on a careful exam, your child’s age, their dental development, and the specific concern being treated.
When Should My Child Have an Orthodontic Evaluation?
Many children benefit from an orthodontic evaluation around age 7. By this age, the first permanent molars and front teeth are usually beginning to come in, giving the dentist a better view of how the bite is forming. Even if your child’s teeth appear straight, there may be hidden concerns involving jaw growth, spacing, tooth eruption, or bite alignment.
An early evaluation does not always mean your child needs immediate treatment. In fact, many children are simply placed on an observation schedule so their growth can be monitored over time. The benefit of checking early is that it gives parents more information and allows our team to identify problems before they become harder to correct.
At Children’s Dental Center, we focus on practical, thoughtful recommendations. If your child doesn’t need Phase 1 Orthodontics, we will let you know. If early treatment may help, we will explain the concern clearly and walk you through your options.
Signs Your Child May Need Phase 1 Orthodontics
Your child may need an orthodontic evaluation if they have:
- crowded teeth
- early or late loss of baby teeth
- difficulty biting or chewing
- mouth breathing
- thumb sucking
- tongue thrusting
- crossbite
- underbite
- overbite
- protruding front teeth
- jaws that seem uneven when opening or closing
Some children may also show signs of speech concerns, frequent cheek biting, or teeth that do not seem to meet properly.
Because children grow at different rates, some orthodontic issues are easier to spot during a professional exam than they are at home. Our team can evaluate your child’s teeth, bite, and jaw development to determine whether early treatment, monitoring, or no treatment is needed.
What Problems Can Phase 1 Orthodontics Help Address?
Phase 1 Orthodontics can help with several developing dental and bite concerns. One common reason for early treatment is crowding. If there isn’t enough room for permanent teeth to come in properly, an appliance or expander may help create more space while the jaw is still growing.
Early treatment may also help correct crossbites, where the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when the child bites down. If left untreated, a crossbite may affect jaw growth or cause uneven wear on the teeth. Other bite concerns, such as underbites, deep bites, or protruding front teeth, may also be evaluated during this stage.
Phase 1 Orthodontics can also help manage space after a baby tooth is lost too early. Baby teeth act as natural placeholders for permanent teeth. When a baby tooth is lost before the adult tooth is ready to come in, nearby teeth can shift into the open space. This may lead to crowding or eruption problems later. In these cases, space maintenance may be recommended to help protect the developing smile.

Does Phase 1 Orthodontics Prevent Braces Later?
Phase 1 Orthodontics does not always eliminate the need for braces or aligners later. Some children still need Phase 2 treatment once more permanent teeth have erupted. However, early treatment may reduce the severity of certain problems and help create a better foundation for future orthodontic care.
Think of Phase 1 Orthodontics as early guidance. The goal is not simply to straighten every tooth right away. The goal is to support healthy development, improve jaw or bite relationships when needed, and make room for permanent teeth to come in as ideally as possible.
For some children, Phase 1 treatment can make future orthodontic treatment more efficient. For others, it can help reduce the risk of more complicated care later. Our team will always explain what Phase 1 treatment can realistically accomplish for your child.
What Happens During a Phase 1 Orthodontic Visit?
During your child’s visit, we will evaluate their teeth, bite, jaw growth, spacing, and oral habits. We may also review X-rays or other diagnostic information to see how the permanent teeth are developing below the gums. This helps us understand not only what is visible now, but what may be coming next.
We will talk with you about any concerns we see and explain whether treatment is recommended. If your child needs Phase 1 Orthodontics, we will discuss the type of appliance or treatment that may be used, how long treatment may take, and what you can expect at home.
Our team works hard to make children feel comfortable during every visit. We understand that orthodontic treatment can feel unfamiliar at first, especially for younger patients. That is why we take time to explain things in a child-friendly way and help parents feel confident about the plan.
