Here is what the orthodontic process looks like for adult patients.
Step 1: Completing Your Orthodontic Patient Forms
Before your first appointment with the orthodontist, we ask that all new orthodontic patients complete a patient intake packet specific to the orthodontic department. Orthodontic care involves a different set of medical considerations than general dental care. Questions will relate to factors such as breathing habits, jaw function, past dental work, and medications that are directly relevant to how we evaluate and plan your treatment.
Taking time to complete the forms thoroughly before your appointment gives the doctor the background needed to make the most of the time you have together.
Step 2: Your Orthodontic Consultation
Your first appointment with our orthodontic team is a consultation, and it comes with no obligation to begin treatment. This visit is an opportunity to meet the doctor, discuss what you are hoping to address, and receive a thorough evaluation. We offer both in-office and virtual consultations, so you can choose the option that fits your schedule.
During the consultation, we will:
- Review your medical and dental history
- Provide a thorough orthodontic examination
- Take photographs, dental X-rays, and/or a 3D digital scan when needed
- Discuss our findings and what they mean for your treatment options
- Review recommended treatment, timing, and what the process involves
If treatment is recommended, the doctor will walk through the options, answer your questions honestly, and review the financial details so you can make a confident, informed decision.

Step 3: Starting Treatment
If you decide to move forward, your start appointment will be scheduled at a time that works for you.
Depending on the treatment plan, some patients are able to begin the same day as the consultation. Others may require a customized appliance or laboratory-made component, in which case we use 3D digital scanning technology to create a precise digital model of your teeth. This means no traditional impressions and a more comfortable process from the start.
Your treatment coordinator will walk you through exactly what to expect at your start appointment, including what will happen, how long it will take, and what to plan for afterward.
Step 4: Active Treatment
Once treatment begins, you will return for regular visits throughout the process.
The frequency of those appointments depends on the type of treatment you are receiving. At each visit, the orthodontist evaluates your progress, makes any necessary adjustments, and confirms that treatment is on track. You will always leave knowing where you stand and what comes next.
Treatment timelines for adults vary depending on the complexity of the case and the type of treatment involved. The doctor will give you a realistic estimate at the start and keep you updated as treatment progresses.
Step 5: Retention, Protecting Your Results
When active treatment is complete, the retention phase begins, and it is one of the most important parts of the process.
After braces or appliances are removed, teeth naturally tend to shift as the surrounding bone and tissues stabilize. Retainers keep your results in place, not just during the initial adjustment period, but for the long term. Teeth can shift at any age, and consistent retainer wear protects your investment for years to come.

- Which type of retainer is right for you
- How and when to wear it
- How to care for it properly
- How long retention should continue
- When to return for follow-up visits
